I am writing to you as your constituent to urge you to support the “Recognition of the State of Palestine Bill” which will be voted on in Parliament on the 29th of November 2024.
This bill, introduced by Shockat Adam MP, seeks to ensure that the UK joins more than 140 United Nations members in recognising the state of Palestine. Such recognition would not only be a step towards affirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, but it would also contribute to establishing the foundations for lasting peace in the region. As you are aware, Palestine has long been denied full sovereignty, while Israel’s settlement expansion, land confiscations, and recent actions in Gaza have further eroded the possibility of a peaceful two-state solution.
By supporting this bill, the UK would take a strong and principled stance in line with international consensus. In June, 25 UN experts called for the recognition of Palestinian sovereignty, describing it as an essential step toward peace, security, and self-determination. The time for this decision is now, especially as the bill would make it clear that this recognition is not at the expense of Israel, but rather in pursuit of lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
I ask that you please consider the historical context, the overwhelming international support, and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. By voting in favour of this bill, you will be part of a positive step towards stability and justice in the Middle East.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing your position on this matter.
